Description

The RUDAK experiment is a multi-function digital communications system for supporting user digital communication as well as secondary experiments aboard Phase 3D. It is based on a pair of NEC V53 processors, each with 16 megabytes of error-correcting memory, multiple serial ports with direct memory access (DMA) support and high-speed FIFO buffering between processors. Extensive use is made of anti-fuse-based programmable logic to reduce size and power consumption.

Each processor has a pair of 9600 bit/sec modems designed by G3RUH, as well as four DSP-based modulators and four DSP-based demodulators for very flexible operation. The DSPs are ADSP-2171 chips donated by Analog Devices, along with AD9042 high-speed 12-bit A/D converters and AD7008 DDS modulators. Harris HSP50016 chips are used for the demodulator downconverters. This combination results in an extremely powerful combination to handle most low- and medium-speed formats currently envisaged. There is also currently planned a pair of 153.6 kbit/sec PSK (or RSM-8) modems for high-speed experiments.

RUDAK will serve as the communication medium for command and control (except for power) of the SCOPE camera experiments, the GPS experiment and CEDEX.

RUDAK is a truly international effort in its own right, with major contributions from North America, England and Germany.
